Issues such as environmental impact, construction costs, alternative infrastructure priorities, and economic sustainability have fueled debate for decades. The major commercial port of Augusta will allow goods (including Sicilian products) to be sent and received by rail throughout Italy and Europe, reducing time, costs, and pollution. Even a small portion of this traffic would be enough to significantly increase Sicily\u2019s GDP (currently around \u20ac80 billion annually).<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/4&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;4406&#8243; img_size=&#8221;150&#215;150&#8243; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow_border&#8221; css_animation=&#8221;bottom-to-top&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;3\/4&#8243;][vc_column_text css_animation=&#8221;bottom-to-top&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;]<strong data-start=\"5720\" data-end=\"5772\">Q: It only takes 20 minutes to cross the Strait.<\/strong><br data-start=\"5772\" data-end=\"5775\" \/><strong data-start=\"5775\" data-end=\"5781\">A:<\/strong> This is misleading. The real travel time includes waits, boarding, disembarking, and transfers, which often exceed one hour. Tolls will cost more than the ferries.<\/strong><br data-start=\"1588\" data-end=\"1591\" \/><strong data-start=\"1591\" data-end=\"1597\">A:<\/strong> Forecasts indicate <strong data-start=\"1617\" data-end=\"1635\">very low tolls<\/strong> of about <strong data-start=\"1645\" data-end=\"1653\">\u20ac7\u20139<\/strong>. This is a <strong data-start=\"1665\" data-end=\"1675\">public<\/strong> infrastructure and as such does <strong data-start=\"1708\" data-end=\"1715\">not<\/strong> need to directly recoup construction costs.
