Roles and Mission
Stretto di Messina S.p.A.
Founded in 1981, Stretto di Messina S.p.A. was established to coordinate technical and financial studies and to guide, on behalf of the Italian State, the implementation of the project for a stable connection between Sicily and Calabria.
The company’s main mission is to ensure that the Bridge is built according to the highest standards of safety, technological innovation, and sustainability. To achieve this, Stretto di Messina S.p.A. collaborates with leading industrial partners, research institutions, universities, and regulatory bodies.
It plays a central role in direction and supervision, coordinating the work of the General Contractor (Eurolink Consortium, led by Webuild), while ensuring compliance with environmental, urban, and engineering requirements.
Over the years, the company has gone through alternating phases — from suspensions to reactivations — due to political and economic decisions. Despite these challenges, it has preserved a valuable heritage of technical expertise and preliminary studies, which today serve as the foundation for the project’s relaunch, officially confirmed with the approval of the final design in 2023.
Beyond its technical and managerial role, Stretto di Messina S.p.A. is also the institutional point of reference for communication and transparency toward citizens and local communities. Through information and engagement initiatives, the company aims to explain the project’s benefits in terms of mobility, territorial integration, and economic development, while addressing environmental and social concerns raised in public debate.
From an organizational standpoint, the company operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT), which define its strategic directions. Its governance model combines public control with the contribution of private-sector technical and industrial expertise, following a public–private partnership approach.
With the construction of the Bridge, Stretto di Messina S.p.A. is preparing to manage a one-of-a-kind infrastructure: a suspended span of over 3 kilometers, which will stand not only as an engineering record, but also as a symbol of connection and modernity for Italy and Europe as a whole.
