Bridge of Messina: Government Responds to the Court of Auditors’ Requests
Supplementary documentation with new acts filed in Rome
The administrative process for the Bridge over the Strait of Messina is progressing rapidly. The Dipe – Department for Economic Policy Planning and Coordination of the Presidency of the Council – has filed with the Rome headquarters of the Court of Auditors a substantial set of documents containing answers to the questions raised by the supervisory body.
It consists of numerous files, including entirely new acts, prepared in cooperation with the relevant ministries: Economy and Finance, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport, as well as with the Concessionaire, Stretto di Messina S.p.A.
Deadlines met ahead of schedule
The documentation was filed ahead of the deadlines set by the Court of Auditors demonstrating the Government’s willingness to respond promptly and transparently.
The additional documents address the clarifications requested on September 30 as part of the standard preventive oversight procedure for a project of this scale.
The goal is to enable the Court to conduct a comprehensive and well-documented review of the updated final design, so that the process can move forward without delays toward the operational phases.
Minister Salvini: “Great satisfaction with the work done”
The technical update meeting took place at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT), attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Matteo Salvini, who opened the session with these words:
“It is a great satisfaction for me, thank you.”
During the meeting, the designer’s report on the updated final project was presented — a central element of the file submitted to the Court.
Updated project and detailed responses
According to institutional sources, the submitted package contains detailed and comprehensive responses to the Court’s requests, covering both technical-design aspects and legal-administrative elements and regulatory compliance with EU and Italian legislation.
This phase of dialogue with the Court of Auditors is considered crucial for procedural regularity and represents an administrative turning point ahead of the start of preliminary construction activities.
Toward the start of works by the end of the year
The Government maintains its goal of starting preliminary operational activities by the end of 2025.
With the filing of responses to the Court, the Bridge dossier takes another step forward, consolidating the institutional and technical path toward the opening of construction sites.
A key milestone in the project timeline
Submitting the documents to the Court of Auditors is one of those less visible yet essential moments: without this validation, no public works of this magnitude can begin.
The Bridge over the Strait continues to move forward according to the announced roadmap, with careful attention to procedures and ongoing dialogue with oversight bodies.
